Jack Cain Paintings

Early Water Colour – 1935 (Dave)

This is the earliest painting we have

Early Pencil Sketches -1937 (Dave)

This is a self-portrait of dad.

This a friend: George Schrimpton

Another friend Dennis McFarlane.

There is no date on this. But it appears to be the same era as the above sketches.
My guess is that dad is on the left.

Water Colour – 1937 (Dave)

No sure who the subject is.

Moraine Lake – 1939 (Dave)

On the mat is a title “Valley of the Ten Peaks”.
It is pastel. Some of it rubbed off on the glass protecting it.
So, it is a bit smudged.

Water Colour – Dec 1945 (Dave)

This one is titled “Carefree Days”. It is in a frame with a paper backing.
On the back it says: “To Dad from Jack”. It must have been a Christmas present from Dad to his Dad.

The Three Boys – 1956 (Dave)

This was painted in water colour.

Pencil Sketch – 1956 (Dave)

This was Dad’s first camping trip with his boys. He dropped Doug and Dave off at Camp Mini-Yo-We, then took Bryan up to Algonquin Park for a week. Dad came and got Doug & Dave for another week of camping in Algonquin Park. We have dad’s diary from that trip.
There are 2 pencil sketches in the diary.

There is 8mm film of this trip which has Bryan by himself camping with dad. Then Doug and Dave joining for the last week:

Water Colour – 1958 (Dave)

This was at South Tea Lake in Algonquin Park where we camped a number of times.

Pencil Sketch – 1958 (Dave)

This was also at South Tea Lake in Algonquin Park.

Grandma & Grandpa Cain – 1959 (Dave)

Jack’s parents (Ethel & Nelson) painted in oil.

Green Lakes State Park: New York – 1961 (Dave)

This is a pastel done while dad camped with mom, Bryan and Maureen.

This is the campsite at Green Lakes Park. We have 8mm film of this trip taken by our mom & dad with Maureen:

Piseco Lake – Adirondacks NY (Dave)

This is a pastel done in 1961.

This was the same trip as the above picture. Here is 8mm film of the lake.

Colpoy’s Bay (Dave)

This is pastel and is in a frame. No date. But, probably from early 1960’s

Golf Trophies – Start 1965 (Dave)

Dad took up golfing later in life. He started a Westinghouse Golf Tournament and called it “Cain’s Mutiny”.
Dad made the trophies, which somehow have lasted all this time.
The first tournament was in 1965 and the last in 1985.
The first trophy was for the “Hassel” – not sure what that was. Dad won it in 1984!

The second trophy was for “Low Gross”. Our dad didn’t win that one!

Wiesenkirche – Soest Germany – 1967 (Dave)

Dad painted this in oil in 1967 from a black & white photo Dave took in 1965.

The photo was in black and white. Dad added the colours and a blue VW which was the car Dave had while in Germany.

In 2020 son-in-law Johnny saw a jigsaw puzzle with what he thought as a familiar scene.

The box simply said it was a Village in Germany. It was the exact same picture Dave had taken years earlier!

Great Grandma Eastham (Dave)

Grandma Cain’s maiden name was Eastham. We think this is her mother Mary.
This a water colour and was painted in 1994

Easter Egg Roll – Pencil Sketch – early 1990s (Dave)

Dad was the catalyst for the family egg rolls. He would paint eggs (hard boiled of course) with things that represented the people he did them for.
This is a sketch we found with no date.
There are clues. It was after Natalie was born (1989), before mom passed away (2001) and before Faye was born 1999. Gary’s egg has a sketch which shows what looks like hockey. Gary stopped playing around 1992.

Here is a picture from 1994 of the eggs our dad had painted.

Water Colour (Dave)

There is no date or subject on this one.
